Folk art can actually be considered an umbrella term as it can define a diversity of mediums and material used to express the artist's view. One such category encompasses any medium that can be applied to canvas, paper, cardboard or any other paper by- products. This would include mediums such as oils, tempera, watercolors, pencils and pastels.
The modern day collector is especially interested in two types of contemporary folk art expression. The firts type, which is probabaly the most universal is named memory painting.
Generally self-taught, older artists record scenes from their early life and in the process document a way of life that was rural, less complex, and free from the changes wrought by improved communications and transportation in America during the XX. century.
Their idyllic renderings have immense popular appeal. One of the best know XX century memory painting artists are Kathy Jakobse, Grandma Moses, and Mattie Lou O'Kelley.
A separate contemporary category of folk art, fine art is the raw, expressive, seemingly childlike efforts of artists like Will Hawkins, Howard Finster and Thornton Dial, who are related to contemporary art at least as much as they are to folk art. They represent an individual vision that reflects the artist's concern with oneself, one's place in society, and one's highly personal point of view.
These somewhat eccentric, self-taught painters and sculptors are referred to as "outsider" artists or "isolate" artists. Though their work is created outside of the traditions generally associated with folk artists, many of their pieces will endure and add significantly to the patchwork of naive creativity in America in the twentieth century.
